President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with India, saying closer ties with the neighboring country will receive special priority.

President Dr. Muizzu made the remarks in a social media message marking India’s Independence Day, extending greetings to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India.

The president highlighted India’s 80 years of independence as a reflection of the country’s resilience and aspirations.

He also emphasized the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and India, describing the relationship as one built on mutual respect and close ties.

Relations between the two countries date back well before the establishment of formal diplomatic relations on November 1, 1965.

Historical trade and people-to-people links have contributed to the development of the bilateral relationship over the decades.

Cooperation has expanded further since President Dr. Muizzu took office, with the two countries reaching agreements across several areas during PM Modi’s visit to the Maldives last year for the country’s Independence Day celebrations.

The Maldives and India are also engaged in discussions on a proposed free trade agreement, which could further expand economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries.

India celebrates Independence Day annually on August 15, commemorating its independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

President Dr. Muizzu’s latest message signals the Maldives’ continued intention to deepen cooperation with India across economic, diplomatic and other areas of mutual interest.
