Foreign Ministry confirms transfer of over USD 1.2 Million telethon donation to UNRWA for Palestine aid
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the funds raised through the national telethon, "Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin" or "Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine," have been successfully transferred to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The donation, totaling USD 1,248,826.56, was sent through the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) on August 20, 2024, and is intended to support Palestinian people facing hardship.
According to the Foreign Ministry’s statement, this contribution, made under the guidance of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, represents a significant gesture of solidarity from the Maldivian public.
The telethon, organized by Public Service Media (PSM) on June 12, mobilized widespread national support, drawing contributions from state institutions, schools, private individuals, and companies.
The total funds were independently verified by the audit firm Crowe Maldives LLP according to Ministry, ensuring transparency in the donation process.
The Ministry has confirmed that the transfer to UNRWA was processed through JP Morgan, with a transaction receipt attached to the statement.
Additionally, a debit advice document confirmed the funds were deposited into the "UNRWA for Palestine" account.
The government highlighted that this substantial donation reflects Maldives’ steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and aligns with the nation's commitment to advocating for Palestinian independence.
In its statement, the ministry condemned the genocidal actions by Israel, asserting that these actions violate international and humanitarian law.
The Foreign Ministry also mentioned ongoing discussions with UNRWA to allocate the funds toward both immediate relief efforts and longer-term support projects for the Palestinian people.
The telethon was held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on June 12 and raised approximately MVR 1.8 million within its first six hours.
Additionally, donation boxes were placed at 13 locations across Male' to encourage public contributions.
The collective effort underscores the Maldivian people's strong sense of solidarity with Palestinians in their time of need.
