Maldives and Samoa explore collaboration on climate action, tourism, and economic development
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with Samoan Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa on Wednesday during his official visit to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.
The meeting highlighted opportunities for collaboration between the two island nations, focusing on climate action, tourism, and economic development.
During the discussions, Vice President Latheef expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome extended to the Maldivian delegation and commended Samoa’s efforts in hosting CHOGM 2024.
Both leaders acknowledged the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly the impact of climate change. They explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as environmental protection, building climate resilience, and promoting sustainable tourism. Economic development and trade were also key topics, with both nations recognizing the potential for deeper ties.
He also praised Samoa’s leadership within the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) and its advocacy on behalf of vulnerable nations in the face of climate change.
