Maldives set to reach 5,000 illegal expat deportations in November
Maldives is expected to reach its target of deporting 5,000 irregular expatriates by the one-year anniversary of the current administration next month, according to Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, the Controller General of Immigration.
During a press briefing at the President's Office, Shamaan stated that 4,361 irregular expatriates had already been deported as of Monday.
This includes those detained for immigration violations, individuals who voluntarily requested repatriation, and those who were given notice to leave the country.
As of October 21, we have deported 4,361 foreigners as part of the one-year target of 5,000 illegal immigrants
Immigration Controller General Stated
He expressed confidence that the target would be met before the November 17 deadline.
I believe we will therefore be able to reach our target of 5,000 illegal expatriates ahead of November 17, ahead of one year to this administration. I am very confident in this regard
He added
Shamaan also highlighted the success of 'Immigration Watch,' an anonymous platform launched in July for reporting illegal activities involving expatriates.
The platform has received 861 reports so far, with 596 cases already addressed, 70 under review, and 174 deemed unverifiable.
Currently, 135 expatriates—121 men and 12 women—are being held in detention.
Shamaan further raised concerns about an increasing number of attempts to illegally enter the Maldives, stating that Immigration had intercepted 51 such incidents at air borders this year, many of which involved forged visas.
