Opposition MDP MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem representing south Galolhu has moved to question Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon regarding the use of three military drones acquired from Turkey to patrol the Maldives’ economic zone.

During a recent parliamentary session, Meekail sought clarification on whether the drones, which were purchased at a cost of MVR 570 million, have commenced operations within the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Meekail also inquired about the specific purposes for which the drones have been utilized since their introduction.

The Turkish-made “Bayraktar TB2” drones were ceremoniously launched at Maafaru Airport in March.

These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can operate at altitudes exceeding 25,000 feet for over 27 hours.

To date, the only reported use of MNDF drones occurred during an operation on April 20, aimed at locating a missing boat near Raiymandhoo in Meemu Atoll.
