Maldives to raise minimum age for trading tobacco and tobacco products to 21
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to present amendments to the Tobacco Control Act in Parliament on Tuesday, underscoring the Government's commitment to reducing tobacco consumption in the Maldives.
In a post shared on his official X account on Monday evening, the President revealed key details of the proposed changes.
Among the most significant measures is raising the legal age for trading tobacco and tobacco products from 18 to 21, targeting a reduction in tobacco uptake among youth.
President also highlighted that the amendments would introduce stricter enforcement measures to tackle violations of the Tobacco Control Act, ensuring more robust penalties for non-compliance.
In addition to banning the import and use of vaping devices, amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, which include raising the minimum age for trading tobacco and tobacco products from 18 to 21, will be presented in Parliament tomorrow. The law will also be revised to enforce stricter penalties for those who violate the Act.
