Maldivian government officials did not participate in the China-Indian Ocean Forum

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that the Government of the Maldives did not participate in the "China-Indian Ocean Forum on Development Cooperation" held in Kumming, China. 

The government statement comes after India claimed that the Maldives had participated in a forum organised by the China Development Corporation Agency (SIDCA) in collaboration with the Chinese Foreign Ministry on November 21.

A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the participation of individuals or groups of individuals in the Maldives will not be officially represented by the Government of Maldives.

However, Former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan participated in the China-Indian Ocean Forum on Development Cooperation organised by China. 

The Government of Maldives did not participate in the above-mentioned Forum, and communicated its decision not to participate to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the Maldives on 15 November 2022.

Said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement

The statement stated that the President has the power to formulate and implement foreign policy and that the people who will attend the international meetings of the Maldivian government. The statement stated that the Maldives will select and arrange the following through diplomatic channels. 

The China-Indian Ocean Region Forum was attended by representatives from 19 countries in the Indian Ocean as well as three international organizations.
