President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed plans to create a comprehensive master plan aimed at harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to boost economic progress in the Maldives.

The decision, made in consultation with cabinet ministers during a meeting on October 16, 2024, outlines a strategic approach that will align with regional best practices to maximize the benefits of AI while addressing potential risks.

The masterplan will center on two key priorities: managing the risks associated with AI deployment and establishing a strong legal framework to regulate AI technology.

This initiative reflects the Maldives' ongoing efforts to foster a digital economy and increase productivity through AI.

Last month, President Dr. Muizzu emphasized these efforts during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, where he discussed the country's commitment to digital transformation.

Following thorough discussions within the cabinet, President Dr. Muizzu instructed that, once the masterplan is developed, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, will present the relevant documentation.

These ministries will oversee the development and implementation of the AI strategy.
