Immigration watch reports 840 cases, mostly illegal businesses
Maldives Immigration Department has received 840 cases through its "Immigration Watch" platform, which was launched to allow the public to report issues related to expatriates.
According to statistics released, most of the cases, 221 of them concern illegal businesses run by foreigners.
Work visa violations are the second most reported issue, with 206 cases.
Other reports include:
- 50 cases of prostitution
- 7 cases of black market currency exchange
- 10 tourist visa violations
- 9 employer sponsor breaches
- 2 instances of document fraud
- 9 cases of drug trafficking
- 7 cases of human trafficking
- 32 missing persons reports
- 3 border intelligence cases
- 40 other incidents
Of the 840 cases submitted, Immigration has addressed 596. Seventy are still under verification, while 174 were not accepted.
Launched on July 17 last year, Immigration Watch aims to enhance public safety and enforce immigration laws, making it easier for citizens to anonymously report illegal activities involving expatriates.
The platform ensures the confidentiality of informants to encourage reporting of serious immigration-related offenses.
