Mohamed Shareef appointed as BML’s first Maldivian CEO

Maldives National Bank, Bank of Maldives, has appointed Mohamed Shareef, a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in the financial sector, as its new CEO.

This marks the first time a Maldivian has been named to the position.

BML announced that Shareef will officially assume his role tomorrow.

Throughout his time with the bank, Shareef has been instrumental in modernizing its services, playing a pivotal role in introducing key initiatives such as cobanking systems, debit and credit cards, as well as internet and mobile banking.

His leadership has also been vital in establishing self-service banking and eCommerce payment gateways, all part of BML’s broader digital transformation strategy.

In addition to his contributions to the bank's modernization, Shareef has been deeply involved in the successful execution of BML’s strategic goals.

Shareef holds an MBA from the University of Manchester, UK, and has completed the prestigious "Senior Executive Programme" for CEOs and senior executives at the London Business School.

BML described Shareef’s appointment as a significant step forward for the Maldives' financial sector, emphasizing the importance of a Maldivian leading the country’s national bank.
