Former Maldivian Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer has been nominated as the country's new ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

The appointment was forwarded to the Parliament by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and the letter was read during Tuesday's parliamentary session.

The nomination has now been sent to the Foreign Relations Committee for further review.

Sareer will succeed Mohamed Thaha, who was reassigned as ambassador to Pakistan in June.

Sareer has a long-standing career in diplomacy, having joined the foreign service in April 1986.

Over the years, he has held several key positions, including Foreign Secretary, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations (2012–2017), and ambassador to both the United States and Bangladesh.

In addition to his extensive diplomatic experience, Sareer has served in various senior roles at the Foreign Ministry, including Assistant Undersecretary, Deputy Director, Director-General, and others.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia.
