Maldives Customs has intercepted shipments of cannabis that were smuggled into the country under the guise of vape oil, according to the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan.

The minister made the announcement via a post on 'X' last night, highlighting the growing concern over drug trafficking disguised as vaping products.

The minister stated that these incidents are a major reason why President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has moved to ban the import of vaping products into the Maldives.

In a separate post, Minister further revealed that on May 14 of this year, authorities seized vape cartridges containing cannabis, further raising alarm about the misuse of such devices.

He expressed concerns about vape devices laced with drugs being distributed to children in schools, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

On Monday, President Dr. Muizzu announced that the import of vaping devices and their components will be banned from November 15, 2024.

In addition, the use, possession, manufacture, sale, advertising, and distribution of vaping devices will be prohibited throughout the Maldives from December onward.
