Addressing international delegates at this prestigious gathering in Geneva today, he emphasized the critical role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in building a more sustainable future while detailing the Maldives’ own efforts to transition to renewable energy and restore its fragile ecosystems.

Speaker Abdul Raheem shared that the Maldives is deeply committed to addressing the impacts of climate change, being one of the most vulnerable countries.

For us, leveraging STI to build resilient infrastructure, develop sustainable energy, and protect our marine ecosystems is not merely about progress; it is about survival

He stated

Highlighting key initiatives, the Speaker referenced two major commitments announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at COP28.

The Maldives is committed to providing 33% of the nation’s electricity from renewable energy within the next five years

He said

underscoring the country’s transition to greener energy sources.

In addition, he discussed the ambitious national campaign aimed at planting five million trees to restore ecosystems and combat deforestation.

These efforts reflect our vision to become a nation centered on sustainable energy with a green and clean atmosphere

Speaker Abdulla said

He pointed to the significant role of parliaments in supporting such initiatives by closing digital gaps and fostering innovation.

Parliaments must help drive the adoption of renewable technologies and ensure STI is used for the benefit of all

He added

Speaker Abdul Raheem also touched on the Maldives’ leadership in using artificial intelligence (AI) for climate monitoring.

We are employing AI-driven technologies for environmental monitoring and erosion detection to safeguard our vulnerable ecosystems

He said

emphasizing the critical importance of advanced technologies in preserving the nation’s natural resources.

Beyond its own initiatives, the Maldives called on the global community to step up efforts in combating climate change.

We must work together to ensure that scientific progress benefits everyone and contributes to a peaceful and sustainable future,

Abdulla urged

In closing, the Speaker reiterated the Maldives’ dedication to aligning its climate strategies with global goals, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Pact for the Future.
He expressed hope that other nations would follow suit in integrating STI to address environmental challenges and create resilient societies.

The Maldives, a nation on the front lines of climate change, continues to champion sustainability and climate action on the world stage, with Speaker Abdul Raheem’s address reinforcing the country’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
