The Government of Japan, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, officially launched the AgriBoat, a purpose-designed vessel aimed at boosting agricultural productivity in the country.

The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday at Hulhumale Marina, where Japan's Ambassador to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, formally presented the AgriBoat to Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Mr. Adam Shareef Umar.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shareef described the introduction of the AgriBoat as a “historic achievement” for the Maldives, highlighting its significant impact on ensuring food security and improving the living conditions of the Maldivian people.

The AgriBoat is part of the 'Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy' (PDSAE), an initiative launched under an agreement between Japan and the UNDP in October 2021.

The project, valued at USD 2.75 million (approximately MVR 42.4 million), is designed to enhance the agricultural supply chain in the Maldives, reduce post-harvest losses, and lower carbon emissions.

The 65-foot vessel incorporates environmentally friendly technologies, including low-carbon systems and cold storage facilities, making it capable of transporting large volumes of produce across the islands.

With a storage capacity of 35 square meters, the AgriBoat will provide farmers better access to markets, clients, and customers, improving their overall reach.

Japan's Ambassador, Takeuchi Midori, emphasized Japan's commitment to supporting sustainable economic growth in the Maldives, in collaboration with international partners like the UNDP.
