MDP President Shahid criticizes government’s naivety and inexperience in diplomacy
Former Foreign Minister and current MDP President Abdulla Shahid has raised concerns about the current administration’s handling of foreign relations, criticizing what he perceives as diplomatic naivety and inexperience.
In a post shared on social media platform ‘X’, Shahid voiced his apprehensions, stating that the government has shown signs of a lack of understanding in managing international relations, particularly with key partners like India.
What we are seeing is the current administration coming to the realization that international relations cannot be conducted based on lies and deceit. What we are seeing is the administration’s naivety and inexperience in diplomacy
Shahid remarked
His comments suggest dissatisfaction with the way diplomatic efforts have been managed since the administration took office.
Shahid’s critique follows recent decisions by the government to approve projects and initiatives that were previously opposed while in opposition, including the establishment of the Indian Consulate in Addu City and the UTF project, which aims to bolster the Maldives National Defence Force’s (MNDF) operational capabilities.
He highlighted these shifts as indications of the administration’s unpreparedness to navigate complex international partnerships.
Despite his criticism, Shahid expressed hope that the Maldives’ relationship with India, one of the country’s closest neighbors and key allies, will continue to progress, provided the current trajectory of cooperation is maintained.
Happy to see the age-old ties between the Maldives-India being revived. Thank you India for remaining steadfast and resolute with the Maldivian people.

His comments come at a time when President Mohamed Dr. Muizzu is on an official state visit to India, signaling the administration’s focus on enhancing bilateral ties.
