Hulhumale’ Doppler Radar restored for enhanced weather monitoring
The Maldives Meteorological Service has announced the successful restoration of the Doppler weather radar in Hulhumale’, bringing advanced weather monitoring capabilities back online.
In a statement released today, the National Meteorological Agency highlighted that the radar employs cutting-edge technology comparable to that used in developed countries.
This upgraded radar can detect weather conditions within a 250 km radius from Hulhumale’, covering regions from the south of the Maldives to Laamu Atoll and extending northward nearly to Shaviyani Atoll.
The radar's capabilities include providing critical information on rainfall area and thickness, as well as tracking the direction and speed of rain clouds.
Additionally, it offers estimated timings for cloud movement into specific areas, known as nowcasting.
The radar can also capture wind data across different atmospheric layers, which is vital for accurate weather forecasting and ensuring air traffic safety.
The Met Office indicated that efforts are already underway to further repair the radar for prolonged usability.
Plans are in place to expand the radar network to enhance weather monitoring and implement early warning systems across both the northern and southern regions of the country.
