Meral Ayn Latheef has made waves in the swimming community by setting four new national records during the Asian Open Schools Invitational (AOSI) Shortcourse (25m) Age Group Swimming Championships 2024 in Thailand.

Meral began her record-breaking streak in the women’s 100m butterfly event, clocking in at 01:11.52.

This achievement surpassed her previous record set earlier this year at the Rushmoor Royals Summer (L2) Shortcourse Open Meet, where she finished in 01:13.94.

In addition to the 100m butterfly, Meral also set a new national record in the 200m butterfly event with a time of 02:54.06.

This record surpassed her own mark of 02:54.52, achieved at the 2023 Midfield and Street County Qualifier.

Furthermore, Meral established a new national record in the 50m butterfly event, finishing in 00:31.41.

This record broke the previous one held by Aishath Ulya Shaiq, who completed the race in 00:31.76 during the Breakers Big Splash in June 2024.

Meral’s final record came in the women’s 100m individual medley, where she finished in 01:14.07, breaking the former record set by Hamna Ahmed at the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships in 2021, where Ahmed clocked in at 01:15.82.

Meral Ayn Latheef’s impressive performances at the AOSI Championships have not only highlighted her talent but also set a new standard for future athletes in the Maldives.
