On 60th independence day, President Dr. Muizzu pledges to safeguard every inch of the Maldives
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to national sovereignty, pledging that every inch of Maldivian territory will be defended by Maldivians themselves.
Delivering a landmark address to both the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) on the occasion of the 60th Independence Day, President Muizzu became the first Head of State in the nation's history to speak at a joint ceremonial gathering of the two forces.
In his address, the President highlighted the importance his government places on strengthening the country’s security services, stating that although this emphasis has been questioned by some, it reflects a deep understanding that safeguarding the nation is an ever-present responsibility.
He noted the Maldives’ vast maritime territory and stressed that, despite the nation's small population, it is the Maldivian people who must shoulder the responsibility of protecting the homeland.
While acknowledging the need for international cooperation in certain areassuch as acquiring technical expertise or resources President Dr. Muizzu was firm in stating that foreign nations would not be allowed to steer the country's internal affairs.
He paid tribute to national heroes who fought for the Maldives’ independence, urging every citizen to value their sacrifice and uphold the legacy they left behind.
The President emphasized that the responsibility to protect the country must be shared by all, and carried forward for future generations.
Concluding his speech, President Dr. Muizzu expressed deep appreciation for the dedication of the MNDF and MPS, especially during times when the nation’s independence was threatened.
He reaffirmed that bolstering the country’s defence and police services will remain a top priority of his administration an obligation he described as both an honor and a national duty.
