PM Modi meets Nasheed, hails him as strong advocate of India–Maldives ties

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting today with former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who recently rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The meeting took place during Modi’s official state visit to the Maldives, marking a historic occasion that coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and diplomatic relations with India.

In a post shared on social media platform X following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi described Nasheed as “a strong advocate of deeper India–Maldives friendship.”

Modi further emphasized that

the Maldives will always be a valued pillar of our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Mahasagar vision

reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives through capacity building and development cooperation.

This interaction is follows a series of high-level engagements between Indian and Maldivian leaders during Modi’s visit, which has focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, economy, security, and regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Modi is in the Maldives on a two-day State Visit at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

This is his first visit since Muizzu assumed office and Modi’s first overseas visit in his third term. The trip marks 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
