EaseMyTrip, a prominent Indian travel agency, has officially resumed bookings for travel to the Maldives, signaling a renewed phase of cooperation between the two countries.

The agency, which had previously been involved in the “Boycott Maldives” campaign, confirmed today that bookings to the island nation are once again available.

Rumors about the agency reopening its bookings to the Maldives had surfaced five months ago.

However, at the time, the boycott remained in effect, as confirmed by the agency.

In a statement issued today, EaseMyTrip’s founder and CEO Nishant Pitti expressed optimism about the improved relations between India and the Maldives.

He posted on X (formerly Twitter),

Based on positive developments in mending India-Maldives bilateral ties by both governments, we are resuming bookings to the Maldives. This decision comes after careful consideration and follows a constructive dialogue with the Ministry of Tourism of Maldives delegation during their recent visit to India and our office. As a nation-first company, we align with our government and support their vision. It is a progressive step toward renewed friendship and shared goals of enhancing tourism.

Founder and CEO of EaseMyTrip, Nishant Pitti wrote

The boycott campaign against Maldives tourism initially gained traction in early January after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

The controversy escalated when three deputy ministers in the Maldives government reportedly made derogatory remarks about India and Prime Minister Modi, leading to calls for a boycott of the Maldives as a travel destination.

This resulted in a drop in Indian tourist arrivals. Last year, India held the top spot for tourist visits, but the decrease in numbers has now placed it in sixth position.

However, with the easing of tensions, the number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives has begun to rise again, including an increase in visits from Indian celebrities.

This development comes as President Dr. Muizzu prepares for an upcoming state visit to India on Sunday, following an invitation from Indian President Droupadi Murmu.
