U.S. - Maldives ties vital to uphold rule based order in Indian Ocean: President Dr. Muizzu
President Dr. Muizzu stressed the strategic importance of the Maldives' partnership with the United States in maintaining a rule-based international order in the Indian Ocean, during his address at Princeton University on Thursday.
Speaking at the prestigious ‘Deans Leadership Series’ of Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs, President underscored how the Indian Ocean's sea lines are critical to global trade and energy security, with the Maldives at the heart of these routes.

President Dr. Muizzu stated
referring to the longstanding partnership between the two nations since Maldives' independence.
He highlighted that over 50% of the world’s daily oil consumption and a significant portion of international trade pass through the Indian Ocean.
President Dr. Muizzu also reflected on the Maldives' journey from a young and relatively unknown nation at the time of its independence, to now playing a central role in regional geopolitics.
He noted that since gaining independence in 1965, the Maldives has transformed into a development success story with its pristine beaches and growing global recognition.

Addressing the students of Princeton, he emphasized the significance of the Maldives as a key player in the geopolitical arena, with its strategic position making it an attractive place for global powers seeking to influence the balance of power in the region.

President further affirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s sovereignty and independence while contributing to global efforts in strengthening multilateralism.

The Maldives, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), has consistently led efforts on climate adaptation and sustainability, having co-chaired international negotiations on the issue.
President concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to fostering economic diversification and encouraging foreign investment to drive the Maldives' economic growth.
His government has already introduced reforms to the foreign investment regime, and he aims to make the Maldives an attractive destination for investors.
