In his address during the General Debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu declared his aspiration for the Maldives to become a fully developed nation by 2040.

Becoming a developed nation may seem like a daunting task, and a distant possibility. But I can tell you this. With a goal in sight, and a plan in hand, it is achievable. Because, prevailing and even flourishing against formidable odds, is nothing new for Maldivians,

President Dr. Muizzu said

He envisions a country that commands respect, embodies resilience, and promotes inclusivity and sustainability.

President Dr. Muizzu emphasized that achieving this goal requires a concerted effort to enhance the nation’s productive capacity and embrace digital transformation such as  using drones for medical supply delivery, implementing smart road systems and erosion detection and environmental monitoring driven by artificial intelligence.

He highlighted the importance of boosting productivity through institutional reform and private sector collaboration while leveraging the Maldives' natural beauty and marine resources.

Key initiatives include improving ICT infrastructure, investing in digital literacy, and fostering new industries, including a robust financial sector.

The recently established Development Bank of Maldives aims to support economic diversification and inclusivity, particularly empowering women and youth entrepreneurs.

I believe the Maldives can become a developed country: By investing in the country’s productive capacity and increasing its productivity,

he mentioned

President Muizzu's ambitious vision also includes large-scale urban development projects, such as Ras Malé, to address housing shortages and enhance quality of life.

As the Maldives navigates global challenges, the President calls for unity to ensure that the country thrives sustainably and equitably by 2040.
