We need Nations United in harmony not a United Nations in misery
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
In his address during the General Debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Dr. Muizzu emphasized the urgent need for global unity to tackle pressing crises, many of which he attributed to human actions.
He asserted that nations must come together in harmony rather than allowing the United Nations to exist in a state of despair.
President Dr. Muizzu presented a stark visual, showing a world map where countries grappling with crises were marked in red.
Do you see any countries in green who are not facing a crisis? You know why? Because we are all deep in the red! Humanity is in crisis! And in many cases, it’s manmade!
He stated
He criticized the complacency of nations, remarking,
While the alarms are ringing, the band is still playing the same old tunes, as the whole ship descends deeper and deeper into uncharted waters.
He added
The President called for the United Nations to enact meaningful changes that impact the lives of individuals, urging the organization to enforce its resolutions on both global and local scales.
He highlighted the necessity for a multilateral framework that uplifts smaller nations like the Maldives, saying,
We need a system that champions us and delivers for us.
President Dr Muizzu
Expressing his concerns, President Dr. Muizzu pointed out the UN’s shortcomings in addressing vital issues such as climate change, conflict, and inequality.
The Maldives cannot—and will not—stand idle while the multilateral system fails. Our survival depends on the well-being of the world,
He declared
President Dr Muizzu called for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations, insisting that its continued relevance hinges on its ability to foster real, positive change.
His address served as a clarion call for world leaders to transform the UN into a robust force for peace, security, and sustainable development.
