The People's National Congress (PNC) has confirmed that the Parliament will hold an extraordinary session tonight to begin the process of appointing a new Prosecutor General (PG).

Ibrahim Falah, MP for Inguraidhoo and leader of the PNC parliamentary group, shared the information with Voice, stating that nominations for the position will be submitted first, after which the names will be forwarded to the relevant committee.

Following committee reviews, another parliamentary session will be held to approve the appointment.

As per the Constitution, the Prosecutor General must be appointed within one month of the vacancy.

Falah highlighted that the deadline is approaching on the 21st of this month, prompting the need for tonight's extraordinary session.

The PNC leader explained that the government will submit names for consideration, which will then be sent to the committee for interviews.

Once the committee stage is completed, a second session will be held for final approval.

The Prosecutor General's post became vacant after the resignation of Hussain Shameem, who stepped down following an attempt to remove him from office.

Despite this, a vote was held on the night of July 22 to remove Shameem.
