Athuhar’s body brought back for funeral tonight
The funeral prayer for Adam Athuhar will take place at 22:00 at the Hulhumalé Sahara Mosque.
Athuhar, who had been imprisoned for kidnapping a woman and threatening her with a knife, passed away at 4:08 p.m. on February 2 while receiving treatment in the ICU at IGMH after his health deteriorated.
His body was sent abroad for a post-mortem examination and will be returned for burial tonight.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), the National Integrity Commission, and an internal police review for the actions conducted by the police officers.
Athuhar was arrested the day after receiving treatment at ADK Hospital for head injuries sustained when police intervened to rescue the woman on the night of January 29, Thursday.
He was later taken to the hospital again on August 30, after experiencing vomiting and seizures, and was re-arrested upon discharge on August 31.
The court ordered that Athuhar remain in custody until the trial concluded.
While in custody at Dhoonidhoo, he had attempted suicide.
