The Maldives has signed the 'Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction' (BBNJ) treaty, an agreement passed by the UN General Assembly to protect marine life and areas.

With the Maldives signing this treaty, which was formulated by the UN last June, it has become the 92nd country to sign this agreement.

Regarding this matter, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer stated that this is evidence of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts to protect the sea and its life, which are the most valuable resources of the Maldives.

Highlighting the Maldivians' reliance on protecting and preserving the ocean, Minister Zameer stated that the BBNJ treaty would enhance efforts to protect marine life in the high seas, which would consequently boost the tourism and fishing industries.

Minister Zameer said that this is a symbol of the commitment to work together with many parties to protect the ocean, and that the Maldives is ready to play its role in this matter.

The Cabinet advised Maldives to join BBNJ in February of this year.

This treaty is designed to protect and conserve marine life and areas, as well as facilitate their sustainable use. It is important to note that this is the most significant international effort to date to protect and conserve marine ecosystems.
