Adam Athuhar, the 32-year-old man who was arrested last week for holding a woman hostage at knifepoint in Malé, has died while receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), according to a statement from the Maldives Police Service.

The hospital confirmed that Athuhar passed away at 16:08 today.

Police confirmed that Athuhar, who was being held in Dhoonidhoo Prison, attempted to take his own life last night.

Following the suicide attempt, he was immediately transferred to IGMH for urgent medical treatment.

Despite medical intervention, Athuhar succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.

Police officials have stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is underway.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Athuhar’s arrest stemmed from a tense standoff last Thursday night, during which he held a woman hostage at knifepoint in a rented apartment in Malé.

The situation escalated after an argument between the two, reportedly over Athuhar's failure to contribute to rent and other expenses.

The police were able to subdue Athuhar by striking him on the head with a baton, allowing them to safely rescue the victim, who sustained injuries during the ordeal.

Athuhar was initially treated for injuries at ADK Hospital before being transferred to IGMH due to symptoms of a possible concussion.

Medical evaluations, including a CT scan, were normal, and no further issues were detected by psychiatrists and neurologists.

He was discharged from IGMH and remanded in custody pending the conclusion of his trial.

The victim, who had been living with Athuhar, was treated and released from IGMH the same night.

Athuhar had a prior criminal record and was previously released from prison under a presidential pardon.

The police have yet to disclose further details regarding the ongoing investigation into his death.
