At the 20th anniversary celebration of the Maldives Police Service, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau disclosed that a police officer sustained injuries during a recent hostage crisis.

The incident occurred last Thursday when Adam Athuhar, 32, armed with a knife, took a woman hostage in a tense standoff with law enforcement.

CP Shujau explained that the officer was injured by the knife Athuhar was wielding while attempting to secure the safety of the hostage.

The situation ended with Athuhar being subdued after police struck him with a baton, allowing them to rescue the victim.

Medical assessments, including a neurological evaluation, revealed that Athuhar did not suffer any serious injuries.

He has since been taken into custody, with the court ordering him to be remanded until his trial.

In his speech, CP Shujau reflected on the dangers faced by officers, noting that police work is inherently risky, with some officers making the ultimate sacrifice.

He highlighted that the injured officer's quick response was instrumental in preventing more severe harm during the confrontation.

The injuries to his fingers are the reason why the suspect escaped serious injury

Shujau said

The Commissioner praised the Maldives Police Service for their relentless efforts over the past two decades in ensuring the nation's safety, often at great personal cost.

There is no Maldivian who would deny that the police have shed their blood and lives to prevent our land from falling into the hands of criminals

He said

He further emphasized that, in recent years, police have not hesitated to intervene and save lives during critical situations.
