In 2018, the Maldives made history with the opening of its first cross-sea bridge, a landmark development for the small island nation.

Constructed under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) during the administration of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the strategically positioned bridge connects the capital city, Malé, with Hulhule' island which houses Velana International Airport and Hulhumalé.
