Maldives set to launch bunkering services on August 22
Maldives is set to launch international bunkering services in the northern region on August 22.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed announced this while Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "Maldives – Sichuan Trade and Investment Corporation Conference" which was held to strengthen trade relations between China and Maldives.
During his speech, Noting that Maldives is in the middle of an ocean, it is necessary to take advantage of the maritime industry and expand re-exports to the country, he said.
"While Maldives is in the middle of a sea, we have to take advantage of the maritime industry and expand re-exports to Maldives. We are working on that and the bunkering service will also start on the 22nd of this month,"

The required pilot boat and tugboat have been moved to Kulhudhufushi city in preparation for the launch of bunkering services in the north.
Previously speaking at a PNC rally Minister Saeed said that for this purpose in just 6 months, STO has purchased 2 big tankers and STO is working with the MNDF to update the chart.
He also said that Customs and Immigration are also doing the latest work on the service.
The minister added that the launch of bunkering services this year will add $400 million to Maldives GDP of $6.5 billion by July next year.
A term sheet was signed between STO and Vitol Group in March to start an international bunkering facility in nothern region under the Maldives Economic Gateway Project.
