Parliament approves appointment of Habeeb as HRCM member
The parliament has approved appointment of former Election Commission (EC) Vice-President Ismail Habeeb as a member of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
A vote on the appointment was taken during today's parliament sitting.
Habeeb's appointment was approved through the votes of 74 members in favour.
Three members voted against.
President Dr.Mohamed Muizzu nominated Habeeb to be appointed as a member of HRCM on July 15.
The Human Rights Committee then interviewed Habeeb and approved his appointment yesterday.
Speaking at the meeting, Nilandhoo Constituency Member Fathimath Sauda said the committee had interviewed Habeeb and found him to have received more than 75 percent of the marks approved by the General Committee.
Therefore, when the vote was opened for the appointment of Habeeb as a member of the HRCM in yesterday's committee meeting, all the members present at the meeting voted in favour.
Habeeb resigned from the commission in March this year after 21 years of service.
According to the law, a maximum of two terms can be served as an EC member.
Habib has served two five-year terms.
