President Dr Muizzu calls for end to Israel's unlawful settlements following ICJ opinion
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his support for the recent advisory opinion rendered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which addresses the legal consequences of Israel's policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
The opinion was issued on Friday by the 15-judge panel of the ICJ in The Hague, declaring Israel's continued presence in the occupied territories unlawful and urging an end to it "as rapidly as possible."
President Dr Muizzu shared his sentiments on the social media platform 'X', acknowledging the ICJ's recognition of Israel's presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as a violation of international humanitarian law.
He emphasized that the Court's decision aligns with the aspirations of the Palestinian people in their pursuit of statehood and self-determination.
The ICJ's advisory opinion acknowledges the illegal presence of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and supports the Palestinian people's rightful pursuit of statehood. I call on Israel to immediately cease its unlawful settlement policies and make reparations for the damages caused by its exploitative and discriminatory actions.

The President highlighted that this decree renews hope for the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, in accordance with the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Nawaf Salam, President of the ICJ, read the non-binding advisory opinion, emphasizing the urgency of ending Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.
President Dr Muizzu’s endorsement of the ICJ's ruling reinforces the Maldives' commitment to advocating for Palestinian statehood and international justice.
