The Maldives Cabinet has recommended the country join the Samoa Agreement of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).

Following this recommendation, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to seek parliamentary approval for the decision.

This development comes after a cabinet meeting held yesterday, during which the Foreign Ministry proposed the move and extensive discussions were conducted.

The agreement focuses on various key areas including human rights, democracy and governance, peace and security, human and social development, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and development, environmental sustainability and climate change, and migration and mobility.

Joining the OACPS as a full member is expected to create new opportunities for the Maldives, particularly from Europe.

This includes the potential for better pricing for Maldivian fishing products exported to foreign markets.

President Dr Muizzu is now set to forward this proposal to the parliament for approval, marking a significant step towards enhancing the Maldives' international cooperation and economic prospects.
