As a step towards creating more job opportunities for Maldivians, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared the swift detention and deportation of illegal immigrants involved in businesses within 48 hours.

In his address on International Workers' Day, Muizzu emphasized the necessity of enforcing laws to address the longstanding issue of illegal immigration.

The routes utilized by illegal immigrants conducting business in the Maldives will be sealed off, and deportation procedures have commenced within a 48-hour timeframe. These persisting issues, neglected for years, necessitate ongoing vigilance and rigorous law enforcement

stated the President Dr. Muizzu

While the government taking firm action against illegal immigrants, Home Minister Ihusan Ali disclosed plans during a public forum, 'Ahaa' (Ask) held on Wednesday night, to offer opportunities to these individuals before resorting to deportation.

Minister Ihusan clarified that those who repeatedly violate regulations will still have the chance to reintegrate into the system, with deportation reserved for those who decline this opportunity.

However, Minister Ihusan underscored that immediate detention awaits unidentified illegal immigrants, with efforts to verify their identities in collaboration with respective embassies.

The regularization program, set to commence on Thursday, aims to gather comprehensive details of foreign workers, including fingerprints and photographs, within a year, as outlined by Home Minister Ihusan.

The initiative reflects the government's commitment to prioritize the welfare of local workers and curb the adverse effects of illegal immigration on the economy.
