Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has deployed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, for the first time in a search and rescue operation.

The deployment comes as part of efforts to locate a fishing boat carrying three individuals that went missing on Friday.

The boat, named "Farihi," departed from M. Maduvvari to fish in the waters near Raiymandhoo on Friday afternoon.

However, it was reported missing later that night, sparking concerns for the safety of those on board.

Initially thought to have two occupants, it was later revealed that three individuals, who were visiting from K. Maafushi, were on the boat.

In response to the incident, the MNDF Coast Guard initiated a search operation, utilizing the Coast Guard harbor craft 114 and the Coast Guard fast interceptor craft ‘Maafaiy’.

Additionally, the MNDF Air Corps deployed UAVs, marking the first time these drones have been employed in a search and rescue mission.

Since the commencement of the search operation, the MNDF has covered over 440 nautical miles in its efforts to locate the missing boat and its occupants.

The utilization of UAVs demonstrates the Maldives' commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance search and rescue capabilities, particularly in challenging maritime environments.
