High Court to deliver verdict on Former President Yameen's appeal case tomorrow!
The High Court has announced that it will issue its judgment tomorrow in the appeal filed by former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom regarding his conviction for money laundering and bribery linked to the sale of V. Aarah for tourism development.
The decision is expected to be announced in the afternoon, although the exact time has not been specified on the court's website.
The panel overseeing the case consists of Judge Hassan Shafeeu, Judge Huzaifa Mohamed, and Judge Mohamed Saleem.
Yameen, who held the presidency from 2013 to 2018, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for charges related to money laundering and bribery concerning the V. Aarah sale on December 26, 2022.
The High Court concluded all hearings on Yameen's appeal in November 2023, following the initial appeal filed in February 2023.
The verdict hearing is set for tomorrow.
Following President Mohamed Muizzu's victory in the presidential election runoff, Yameen was transferred from Maafushi Prison to his residence in Male' City on October 1, 2022.
Shortly after Muizzu's inauguration, Yameen departed from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and initiated efforts to establish a new party, the People's National Front (PNF).
Although Yameen has violated the terms of his home confinement by attending political events, no action has been taken against him by the Corrections Department.
The National Integrity Commission is currently investigating the department's failure to act against Yameen.
President Muizzu, who pledged to release Yameen during his election campaign, has been criticized by Yameen for the continued home confinement.
However, Muizzu has affirmed his commitment to upholding the independence of the judiciary, stating that Yameen's fate lies in the hands of the judiciary.
