The People's National Front (PNF) has accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of urging former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih not to release former President and PPM leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from prison.

This allegation was made during a PNF rally held on Sunday evening, where the party's Secretary General and former Minister of Technology, Maleeh Jamaal, called for transparency regarding a meeting held between former President Solih and his cabinet on October 1st, 2023, following the presidential election run-off.

Maleeh alleged that President Muizzu had requested President Solih not to release Yameen, asserting that he would handle the matter once he assumed office.

Maleeh claimed that President Dr. Muizzu made this request to President Solih after Yameen's supporters staged protests for his release that evening.

President Muizzu contacted Channel 13 to stop that protest, and (President's Special Advisor) Abdul Raheem contacted as well. What were they trying to stop? The public had gathered following election results calling to release president [Yameen]

stated Maleeh

Addressing the rally, Maleeh questioned why President Dr. Muizzu was delaying Yameen's release and accused him of betraying the trust of the Maldivian citizens.

He called for President Dr. Muizzu's impeachment, stating that he had failed to fulfill his responsibility to release Yameen.

During the rally, Yameen expressed gratitude to the current Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Aslam, for announcing that MDP would submit Yameen's appeal delay to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) to expedite the case.

Yameen then questioned why President Dr. Muizzu had not taken similar action by submitting the matter to the JSC.

Following his victory in the presidential election last year, President Muizzu had reportedly requested outgoing President Solih to place Yameen under house arrest.

Yameen was subsequently transferred to his residence in Male' City the following afternoon.
