Maldives partners with Chinese firm to upgrade fish processing facilities in two Islands and Felivaru

Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today with a Chinese company, Dongfang Electric International Cooperation, to spearhead the development of fish processing infrastructure in two islands, Dh. Maadheli, GDh. Fiyoaree and enhance operations at Lh. Felivaru.

Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, represented Maldives in signing the MoU, as disclosed by the ministry on social media platform X.

Under the agreement, the project in Dhaalu Atoll will be executed in two phases.

Phase one entails the establishment of harbor facilities, landing infrastructure, accommodation, roads, and a 1,500-ton cold storage, brine, and blast freezing facility.

Subsequently, phase two will concentrate on setting up a 50-ton daily processing facility.

Meanwhile, the project in GDH. Fiyoaree is set to include the construction of a 3,000-ton cold storage, brine, and blast-freezing facility, along with a 100-ton daily processing unit, a fish meal plant, and a rihaakuru production facility.

At Lh. Felivaru, the focus will be on installing a 100-ton daily processing facility to replace the existing 38-year-old cannery.
