Two foreign nationals were apprehended on Thursday in the Hiyaa Flat area of Hulhumale’ Phase II for distributing copies of the Bible in Dhivehi language and business cards containing links to articles deemed contrary to Islamic beliefs.

The arrests stirred widespread attention after photos of the women went viral on social media, prompting swift action from the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Contrary to initial speculations, the individuals identified as German nationals had entered the Maldives on tourist visas.

Sources confirm that the two women who were arrested are  25 year old and a 70 year old.

The MPS confirmed their arrest and emphasized that the distribution of such materials violates the Religious Unity Act of the Maldives.

Authorities promptly intervened to enforce laws governing religious harmony and tolerance, underscoring the seriousness of distributing anti-religious materials in the Maldives.

As investigations unfold to discern the motives behind the distribution, the two foreign nationals have been remanded in custody for 10 days, highlighting the gravity of the offense.
