The Sun Island Resort & Spa eco-luxury resort owned by Villa Hotels & Resorts has won the Maldives Leading Green Resort title in the Indian Ocean category at the 29th annual World Travel Awards gala held in Nairobi, Kenya. The coveted environmental award, which is acknowledged across the world as the pinnacle of excellence in the tourism sector, is proof of Sun Island's sustainable lifestyle and its cutting-edge environmental and ocean conservation programs.

Sun Island, one of the biggest resorts in the Maldives, claims 1.6 kilometres of pristine beach dotted with coconut palms. Eco-barefoot living and respect for the environment are woven throughout Sun Island. More than 20,000 coconuts are produced each month in this lush setting, which is located near the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) at the southernmost point of the South Ari Atoll. The luxury beach resort is tucked away by the Indian Ocean and offers visitors an abundance of unrivalled privacy to reconnect with nature in magnificent open-air living spaces that blend seamlessly with the tropical environment.

Sun Island has shown persistent dedication to reducing its carbon footprint by eliminating single-use plastics, recycling, and conserving electricity and water. With more than 2,400 solar panels, the eco-friendly resort produces solar energy that helps to drastically reduce carbon emissions. This further demonstrates the resort's commitment to environmental sustainability and its alignment with the esteemed Green-Key certification.

As such Sun Island has become one of the best eco-resorts in the Maldives and is well deserved for its reputation in the Industry.
