Parliament will convene an extraordinary sitting tomorrow to deliberate on the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan.

The bill, previously rejected in an earlier form, has gained new momentum after receiving the backing of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which holds a parliamentary supermajority.

Despite this support, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reportedly told PNC members on Monday that he does not want the bill passed in a way that would give him excessive control over the media.

Government spokesperson Heena Waleed earlier claimed that the proposed law would protect media freedom and strengthen journalists’ rights.

However, critics, including the Maldives Media Council and the Maldives Journalists Association argue the bill threatens press freedom, restricts constitutional rights, and could place media under tighter political influence.

Journalists have also submitted a petition urging lawmakers to reject the bill, citing provisions they say would obstruct independent reporting and weaken freedom of expression.

Debate on the legislation began during the extended second session of parliament but was interrupted after journalists staged a protest inside the chamber.

With the session now concluded, lawmakers will meet during recess to decide whether to accept the bill for further debate.
