President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is sworn in as President

Dr. Mohammed Muizzu has been sworn in as the President of the Republic of Maldives.

Muizzu was sworn in as President at a ceremony held at Jumhuri Maidhan. After the swearing-in ceremony, a 21-gun salute was given by the MNDF. This is the 8th President of the Republic of Maldives elected under the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives.

Meanwhile, Hussain Mohammed Lateef was sworn in as Vice President. The President and Vice-President were sworn in by Chief Justice Mutassim Adnan.

Article 114 of the Constitution provides that a person elected to the office of President and a person appointed to the office of Vice-President shall, before assuming office, before the Chief Justice of Maldives or a judge designated by the Chief Justice He shall take the oath of office and sign the affidavit.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Saleh, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed. However, former President Abdullah Yameen excused himself from attending the ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by members of parliament and leaders of political parties.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by a number of foreign officials. This was a huge ceremony at a cost of Rs 22 million.
