MDP's parliamentary leader Aslam speaking to the press

MDP has stated that through the People's Parliament's committee on security service, they would request the President's Office for the letter sent by incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, to the Mauritius Prime Minister, stating that Maldives accepts that Mauritius to have sovereignty over Chagos.

This was stated by MDP's Parliamentary Group (PG) 's leader Mohamed Aslam in a press conference held today to announce PG's approval for the submission of a no confidence motion against Parliament's Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Whilst answering the questions by the press, Aslam highlighted repeatedly over the problems that are arising due to the lack of formation of the Parliament's permanent committees, with the change in the Parliament's composition as a significant amount of members recently left his party.

He stated that due to the differences in opinions between the political parties, the formation of committees have been prolonged causing a halt in many important and sensitive bills as well as issues in the Parliament's committees.

He took his committee, 241 committee(Parliament's committee on security service) as as example explaining that a decision hasn't been made about the issue regarding the President's letter as 241 committees have not been held.

Hence, he stated that if 241 committee is held and he is able to chair for the committee again, then he intends to to find the President's letter as well as send a letter to the President's Office for it.

In the Chagos dispute, even before the decision of ITLOS, the opposition have been calling out to the reveal of the letter sent by the President. An emergency motion was even submitted to the Parliament and dismissed regarding this matter . And while the matter had been submitted to 241 committee, up till today, Aslam and MDP's other members had given no indication that they would request to reveal the letter.
