Hussain Humaam Ahmed who was convicted for the murder of former member for Ungoofaaru constituency and religious scholar Dr. Afraasheem Ali, has requested the Supreme Court of Maldives to review his sentence.

On 2012 October Dr. Afraasheem was attacked by a sharp object when he had entered his home and was brutally murdered.

The Criminal court had found the suspect, Humaam, guilty of the murder and sentenced him to death through Qisas.

This conviction was upheld by Maldives High court as well as the Supreme court.

Supreme court had established a rule through which they can review such cases through a narrow scope. It is under this rule that Humaam requested a review of his conviction last April, despite it being proven at all stages of the judicial process.

Supreme court has yet to decide whether or not to accept his request for review.
