The destruction of MDP will not be allowed: Minister Fayyaz
Fayyaz Ismail, the Minister of Economic Development and chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has stated that he would not allow the destruction of the party at gatherings related to the presidential primary.
After losing the primary held in January, Mohamed Nasheed, the speaker of the People's Majilis (parliament) has been working in opposition to the government and president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
After claiming that MDP cannot win this year's elections with the president Solih as a candidate, Nasheed has been having political discussions with Jumhooree Party (JP).
Fayyaz stated in MDP's Whatsapp group today that there have been attempts made to ensure the failure of the party at the parliamentary by-elections scheduled to be held tomorrow in Guraidhoo.
He made a claim that some of the heads of the party has made calls to members of the Guraidhoo constituency, asking not to vote for MDP candidate Ibrahim Shaaz, to which he added that there's an extent to which things can be excused out of respect, and that the attempts being made for the destruction of the party is absolutely unacceptable.
"The gatherings regarding the presidential ticket has gone to a whole new level now - Insha Allah, I will not let the attempts to sabotage the party be a success. There is a limit to excusing things out of respect."

After the primary, Nasheed and his followers have been running a separate act within MDP, called "Fikurehge dhirun", which agreed to support JP's candidate Qasim Ibrahim in this year's presidential elections, and started discussing a coalition agreement.
While MDP has previously stated that no action will be taken against Nasheed despite of him openly supporting a candidate from another party, the warning from Fayyaz could bring some changes to this.
