Unlawful conduct from the Maldives Police Service against peaceful rally
Brutal and unlawful conduct by the Maldives Police Service against the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) supporters in a peaceful rally held in front of the PPM head office has been condemned by the Progressive Congress Coalition.
According to the press release from PPM, the approach taken by the Maldives Police Service to suppress the rally was a violation of multiple constitutional rights, including the right to freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly, with the indiscriminate use of pepper spray and unlawful entry to the coalition's head office.
The Progressive Congress Coalition calls upon the government, independent institutions, and watchdogs, to further look into the misconduct and violation of constitutional rights by the Maldives Police Service.
The brutality of the approaches used to suppress rallies by the Maldives Police Service has been condemned by Transparency Maldives before as well.
Furthermore, the Progressive Congress Coalition highlighted how the fundamental constitutional rights of the Maldivian people has been constantly systemically repressed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, aided by his brother-in-law, Police Chief Mohamed Hameed, who has adopted a brutally totalitarian approach to democracy and human rights.
The commitment of the Progressive Congress Coalition towards the Maldivian nation and its people was highlighted in this press release, along with the reassurance that they will be holding the government accountable and ensuring the rights of the Maldivian people by making them a priority and advocating for them, regardless of the brutality of the approaches by the Solih regime.
It was reaffirmed in the press release that the totalitarian approaches to suppress the efforts made to ensure the accountability of the government would not cause the Progressive Congress Coalition to back off, even with the unlawful utilization of resources such as pepper spray.
