MDP appoints Fayyaz to lead party reform committee
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has established a committee to finalize its long-awaited reform roadmap, appointing former party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail to lead the initiative as the party moves forward with efforts to strengthen its internal structure.
According to the MDP, the party secretariat completed the initial draft of the reform roadmap on May 2, 2024.
The new committee, formed by party chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, has been tasked with finalizing recommendations for amendments to the party's bylaws and organizational framework.
The 10-member committee is chaired by Fayyaz and includes former Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, former North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, North Hithadhoo MP Abdulla Sodiq, MDP Legal Director Mauroof Ahmed, Deputy Chairperson (Administrative) Ibrahim Waheed, former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, Deputy Chairperson (Finance) Ahmed Abdulla, former Legal Director Mahfooz Saeed, and former North Kulhudhuffushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef.
The MDP first announced plans for comprehensive party reforms in 2024 following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election.
Fayyaz, who served as party chairperson at the time, stepped down from the position in November 2025.
The reform process aims to modernize the party's governance and organizational structure in response to changes in the country's political landscape and to strengthen the party's institutional framework.
The announcement comes as the MDP prepares to hold its party congress in September.
The opposition party is seeking to build on its recent success in this year's local council elections, where it secured majorities in councils across the Maldives, including all city councils, following setbacks in both the 2023 presidential and 2024 parliamentary elections.
