Former President and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to introducing major governance reforms, saying the MDP will continue working to deliver the changes the public has long demanded.

In a post shared on X, Nasheed said the 2008 Constitution was intended to establish a clear separation of powers but has failed to achieve that goal.

He argued that the current system allows a president with a parliamentary supermajority to gain excessive influence over key state institutions.

The MDP’s expectation was to bring a system that separates powers and makes the government accountable. The 2008 Constitution failed to deliver that outcome,

Nasheed wrote

Nasheed said the MDP’s proposed reform agenda, known as "The Big Change", aims to create a governance system better suited to the Maldives.

The initiative, developed together with former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, includes proposals to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and independent institutions while limiting political influence over them.

The proposed reforms include a new model for selecting the Head of State and Head of Government, which Nasheed and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail say is designed specifically for the Maldives rather than following a traditional presidential or parliamentary system.

The plan also calls for greater public involvement in the removal of Supreme Court justices and members of independent commissions, the introduction of provincial representation in Parliament, and a mechanism that would allow voters to recall Members of Parliament before the end of their term.

The proposals are intended to strengthen checks and balances and improve accountability across state institutions.

We must pursue a ‘reset’ again. The MDP will deliver the change that the people deserve,

Nasheed stated

Nasheed won the MDP chairmanship after campaigning on the reform agenda.

The party has since established a dedicated office, known as Bodu Badhalu (The Big Change), to develop and promote the proposed constitutional and governance reforms.
