The upcoming protest is not aimed at toppling the government: Nasheed
Former President and MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the opposition party’s planned “Vazeefaa Buraasfathi” (Job Thursday) demonstration is not intended to overthrow the government, but rather to highlight concerns over alleged politically motivated dismissals from employment.
Speaking on Sangu TV ahead of the event, Nasheed said the gathering would be conducted as a peaceful march and serve as a platform for citizens to express their concerns regarding job losses.
The protest, scheduled to take place in Malé, is expected to be the first major demonstration organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party since Nasheed assumed the role of chairperson.
I appeal to the police as well, we are not coming out to overthrow the government. This is a peaceful march, a protest, and an expression of our grievances,
Nasheed stated
Nasheed stressed that the objective of the event is to raise public awareness about employment-related concerns and not to create political instability.
He also called for cooperation from law enforcement authorities and assured that participants would conduct themselves peacefully throughout the demonstration.
The MDP has said the march is being organized to draw attention to concerns surrounding individuals who were allegedly removed from their jobs for political reasons.
Party leaders maintain that the event will remain peaceful and focused on advocating for the rights of affected workers.
