The arrival of PayPal in the Maldives is expected to pave the way for additional international payment gateways and digital financial services, according to Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Ahmed Mohamed Saeed.

The minister described PayPal’s entry into the Maldivian market as a significant step toward strengthening the country’s digital economy.

He said the development reflects efforts by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration to address concerns raised by content creators, freelancers, and digital entrepreneurs regarding access to international payment services.

The minister noted that the Maldives has traditionally depended on a limited number of economic sectors and highlighted the need to diversify opportunities as technology continues to reshape the global economy.

He said the government’s Maldives 2.0 vision aims to create new avenues for young people by expanding participation in digital industries and online services.

According to the minister, gaining the confidence of a global platform such as PayPal is expected to encourage other international e-wallets and payment providers to enter the Maldivian market.

He added that broader access to digital payment solutions would help modernize the country’s financial ecosystem and improve connectivity with global markets.

The minister also revealed that discussions between the government and Google have resulted in a new project being planned for the Maldives.

He described the initiative as another important step in advancing the country’s technological development and strengthening its position in the digital economy.

The government is also working to create opportunities for Maldivians to generate income through popular digital platforms, including TikTok and YouTube, as part of wider efforts to support content creators and expand the country’s digital economy.
